1. What is an Inside Bar?

The Inside Bar is a two-candle price action pattern. The first candle is known as the Mother Bar. The second candle is the Inside Bar. To be valid, the high of the second candle must be lower than the Mother Bar’s high, and its low must be higher than the Mother Bar’s low. It is completely engulfed by the previous range.

Psychologically, this represents a standoff between buyers and sellers. It is a period of consolidation, low volume, and volatility contraction. Hedge funds use these quiet periods to accumulate massive positions without tipping their hand. When the price finally breaks out of the Mother Bar’s range, all the trapped traders are forced to cover, fueling a massive directional spike.

2. Anatomy of the Volatility Breakout

Because the Inside Bar is a neutral pattern, it acts as a coiled spring. You do not predict the direction; you place orders on the boundaries and let the institutional momentum pull you into the trade.

3. Step-by-Step Mechanical Execution

Trading the Inside Bar is purely mechanical. Eliminate your emotions and follow this 4-step checklist:

  1. Identify the Mother Bar: Look for a large, directional candle that establishes a clear high and low.
  2. Confirm the Contraction: Wait for the next candle to close completely inside the Mother Bar’s range. Do not front-run the trade. The candle must close to be a valid Inside Bar.
  3. Set Bracket Orders: Place a Buy Stop order 1 tick above the Mother Bar High, and a Sell Stop order 1 tick below the Mother Bar Low. Whichever direction the market breaks, you are automatically pulled into the trade. Cancel the other order immediately.
  4. Place the Stop-Loss: If your Buy order triggers, place your Stop-Loss 1 tick below the low of the Inside Bar (not the Mother Bar, to keep risk ultra-tight). Target at least double your risk (1:2 R:R).

4. Three Institutional Filters for High Win Rates

An Inside Bar in the middle of a choppy, volume-less market will result in a false breakout. Use these filters to only take premium setups:

  • The Daily Trend Filter: If the Daily (D1) chart is in a strong uptrend, only take the bullish breakouts of an Inside Bar on the 15-minute chart. Ignore the downside breaks. Trading with the macro trend increases win rates by over 30%.
  • The Moving Average Squeeze: The best Inside Bars occur when the price pulls back to kiss the 21 EMA. The moving average acts as a springboard, providing dynamic support for the ensuing breakout.
  • The “Coiled Spring” (Multiple Inside Bars): If you see two or even three Inside Bars in a row (getting smaller and smaller), pay close attention. The longer the volatility contracts, the more violent and explosive the eventual breakout will be.
